Update on Brulee

We wanted to wait until we received an update from the vet this afternoon before posting on Brulee.

Brulee at Emergency Veterinary Hospital during Mom Paula's visit

After the phone call from Dr. McCann yesterday afternoon, I decided to take some of the canned food, kibble, and treats that Brulee normally eats (everyone knows how finicky she is). I forgot to ask if I would be able to see her, but when I arrived, the receptionist told me I'd be able to visit with her in a room to see if she would eat from me. Brulee was in the middle of getting a breathing treatment.

I was escorted into one of the examination rooms and a vet tech brought Brulee into me. The vet tech asked me if I had another cat named Truffle and if I went to Cherokee Trail Veterinary Hospital. Turns out, she used to work there and knew the girls. That helped me feel a little better that someone who knew Brulee was watching over her.

The vet tech left Brulee with me and it broke my heart to hear her labored breathing. She didn't want much to do with me. She didn't want to be held and was roaming around the room trying to smell everything. I tried to get her to eat one of her treats, but she walked over and tried to smell it and turned away. I admit, I had an anxiety attack when I first saw her and had to get someone to sit with Brulee while I rushed to the bathroom. I took some deep breaths and went back into the room and told the assistant that Brulee seemed really stressed, was avoiding me, and wasn't eating. I remember saying something about she should probably go back to the oxygen tent.

I thought someone was coming to get her in a couple of minutes, but no one showed up. Looking back, I believe they knew what they were doing by making me stay in the room with Brulee. I managed to get down on the floor on Brulee's level and kept talking to her. She kept going from under a chair to under the desk. I'd continue to pet her as she walked by and would talk to her. At one point, I just got quiet. I didn't know what to do...

I decided to try the food once again. I opened a can of the Weruva chicken and she must have recognized the pop of the can and came over. She licked about three times and then walked away. I could hear her difficult breathing through her stuffy nose. At least she had tried to eat. I sat in the middle of the floor for several more minutes but had to get up because these old bones couldn't take it anymore. I sat up in one of the chairs and Brulee came out from hiding and came over to me. I asked her, "Do you want something to eat?" which is my usual question to the girls. She perked her head up and looked at me. I put a small handful (about 12) of kibble directly on the floor and to my amazement, she ate them. I gave her another handful, and she ate most of it. A couple of minutes later, she came over to me, sat down, looked at me and gave me the biggest meow. I asked her if she wanted a treat and she once again meowed. I gave her some of her Orijen treats and she ate them! I felt much better because she did eat something, even if it was just a little bit. I noticed she was calming down, but her breathing still sounded labored to me. I asked for them to come and get her to take back for some more treatments.

So thankful this facility is in Columbia, SC.

I cried as I left the emergency hospital. I admit I've felt a little guilty, although I know it isn't my fault she is so sick. I believe most of my pet parents feel the same way when their fur children are ill. I felt some success that Brulee had eaten a little, but I was still concerned with her fever, breathing, and lack of appetite.

I didn't call the hospital last night because it was after 8:30 pm when I left and I was exhausted. I came home and cuddled with Truffle and tried to talk to her about Brulee. Truffle continued to get inside the top of Brulee's red Sleepypod carrier. She hasn't done this in a while, so I'm sure she was smelling Brulee.

Dr. Quick, from the emergency hospital called me this morning around 7:30 am. She said Brulee's fever was still up and down (103.8 - 104) throughout the night and that she wasn't eating anything for them. She said they were giving Brulee a stronger antibiotic and continuing to monitor her. I stayed in the bed all morning with Truffle next to me, sleeping off and on, worried about my little girl.

Around 3:30 pm, I called for an update on Brulee. Dr. McCann was back on duty and came to the phone. She informed me that Brulee looked great! She no longer had a fever or nasal discharge and she was eating for them. She said she had just checked on Brulee and Brulee even ate one of the treats from her fingers. She isn't eating the wet food, but she is eating the kibble and treats. Brulee was put on a stronger antibiotic during the night and would still be taking 1/2 pill, once a day, for a few days. Dr. McCann said Brulee may be able to come home later this evening. I told her I would call back later tonight to check on her. I may still ask to leave her one more night to make sure she's stable, but I'm so relieved to hear she is better.

The short little video below is when I was with Brulee yesterday. You may be able to hear her labored breathing, but not sure.

Thank you to everyone for the purrs, prayer, and good thoughts. It sounds like Brulee is beginning to turn the corner and will be home soon.

  17. Oh, sweet Brulee! It's so hard when you have a sick cat and you have to leave them at the clinic--I've been there, and I remember the feeling of the empty spot next to me on the bed where my Dahlia should have been sleeping. Good news that she's been feeling a bit better, though. Lots of purrs and healing mojo from Paws and Effect HQ!

  32. My heart goes out to you and Brulee. There is nothing more heartbreaking then seeing our furkids in pain or not feeling well. I get very emotional when it comes to my pets and their health so I completely understand how you must have felt being in the room with Brulee when she was not at her best. I'm happy to hear she is home with you now, and wish her continued good health.

  40. Poor Brulee. I know she's home now but I know who nerve racking it is when you have to take your fur kids to the vet in an emergency and you feel helpless. Thanks goodness Brulee pulled through and that fever and breathing problems subsided. Hope she's getting back to her old self now. Thinking of you all.

  41. I know you must be worried sick about Brulee but hang in there. She is getting the best help EVER OK?

One thing I remember from somewhere is that cat's won't eat if they can't smell their food. Maybe this was why Brulee was not keen on the wet food? A thought anyway.

Keep us up to date OK?

  42. I'm so glad Brulee is getting better. Do they know what was wrong with her? It's so hard when our pets have to stay at the emergency vet. I've been there. I was afraid when the vet called you that she was getting worse or had passed - at least that's been my experience with veterinarian's calling me. Hopes and prayers for a speedy recovery.
