Curiosity and Happiness

Truffle and Brulee as curious kittens - 2011

Cats must truly be happy because they are so darn curious! Mom Paula says Truffle gave curious it's name because she's always into something. Brulee tends to sit by and watch as Truffle gets into trouble. We thought we'd "flash back" today and show you some photos of us as kittens,
being happy through curiosity.

Truffle and the Refrigerator

Truffle knew there had to be something delicious in the freezer

Truffle has been curious from the first day she came to live with us. She was on top of, underneath, in between, and all over the house. She became very curious when Mom Paula would open the refrigerator/freezer doors. We don't know if it was the coolness, the smell of food, or just kitten curiosity. One day Mom Paula opened the door of the freezer and there was Truffle with her head fully inside checking out the frozen food. Mom Paula sometimes thinks all she saw of Truffle those first few days was her back end.  MOL!

Truffle and the Secretary

Truffle on top of the secretary

Mom Paula had never purchased a cat tree before and wanted to get one for us as kittens because she'd seen us climbing all over them at Mom Terri's house. She put the cat tree in front of the window beside the love seat because of the location and space. Mom Paula thought since Truffle was a kitten and the fact that Sweet Praline never liked high places, that the close location to the secretary wouldn't be a problem. That shows how much Mom Paula knew about Persian kittens - we do like to jump and be up high! Within the first two days Truffle came to live with us, she leapt to the top of the secretary and was having a great time until Mom Paula spotted her. Mom Paula was fearful that Truffle would slip because of the curved surface and hurt herself because of the height. After pausing a moment to capture this on the camera, Mom Paula got Truffle down and turned the cat tree around. Poor Truffle was so disappointed because she was having such a great time seeing the world! The interesting thing is that Truffle has never tried to get to the top of the secretary again.

Truffle and the Pile of Papers

Truffle on top of the precarious pile of papers

We don't know what it is about papers and boxes, but cats love them. The floor can be perfectly clear (not lately around here) and when Mom Paula puts one piece of paper on the floor, one of the girls is right on top of it. Mom Paula is constantly trying to clean out old papers from being a college professor and doing research and there are a lot of them! She thought she was being smart by putting the papers in a box on top of a chair and that would keep Truffle off of them. Not our little Truffle! Mom Paula has no idea how she got on top of this pile of papers without it tumbling over, but she did! Once Truffle decided to get down, with some encouragement from Mom Paula, the pile was cleaned up (for a little bit). There are several more piles in our office now and Brulee loves to climb among the papers and scratch them all over the place and then climbs under the paper. This is next on the list for purging!

Brulee and the Bathtub

Brulee watching Aunt Cindy taking a bath

Mom Paula thought having one kitten was rough. Then along came Brulee about 2 1/2 months later. Brulee was the calmer kitten, but she was just as curious as Truffle. And the two of them together...

When Brulee came to live with us, Mom Paula had a house guest for a few weeks who was staying with us. Aunt Cindy loved to take baths at night after a hard day's work and Brulee was so curious about the bathroom (she still is). One night, Mom Paula looked in the bathroom and saw Brulee on her hind feet looking inside the bathtub and talking to Aunt Cindy. This photo still gives Mom Paula a chuckle. There is something about this hall bathroom that has a major attraction for Brulee. Brulee can be in a deep sleep and if Mom Paula goes in this bathroom, Brulee is in there with her in a matter of seconds.

Brulee and the Recliner

Brulee inside the recliner while Truffle tries to join her

Mom Paula never had any problems with Sweet Praline and recliners. She can't say the same thing for Truffle and Brulee. Truffle, as a kitten, climbed down inside the couch and Mom Paula had to cut the bottom of the liner to get her out. One day, Mom Paula couldn't find Brulee and she noticed Truffle staring at the back of the love seat recliner and all of a sudden, a cute white head popped out. Brulee was having a blast inside and didn't want to come out. Mom Paula ended up stuffing blankets inside this opening to keep Brulee out. When Truffle was older, she got stuck under all of the hardware of the recliner and it scared Mom Paula to death. She was able to get her out safely, but vowed to never have a recliner in the house again because we are so curious!

We hope you've enjoyed our little adventure of our curious kitten stage and we've brought you a little happiness. We're still quite curious, but not with that wild abandonment that we had as kittens. What's something your cat or dog has done because of curiosity that amazes (or scares) you and brings a smile to your face (sometimes after the fact)?

  1. Chanel is fascinated by anything new in the house. New toy....all over it. New scratcher...kept her busy for at least an hour straight. Noise outside the condo... she is the first one up the cat ladder.

  2. What a cute flashback - they really were getting into everything! We don't have a recliner here because my human always winds up with cats that get into things (she is a sucker for mischievous kitties). Sometimes a hotel room will have one, and it always makes my human a bit nervous, although she never uses them.

  3. Those were very cute. Ham gives Mama a heart attack all the time because he runs everywhere...

  4. My cat Jake is 9 years old this month, and he's still all over the place. Truffle was on top of the papers and still looking up to see if she could find anything higher. The bathtub photo is my favorite with Brulee's little fluffy bum.

  13. Oh my CAT you two, I am sure you are giving your Mum grey hairs with fright. How DID you get on top of that secretary!!!!!

I think a Persian owner needs steady nerves and the willingness to sacrifice LOTS of paper ;-)

  14. Such cute curiosity! Paisley and Webster were also on and into everything when they were younger. And just what is it about cats and sitting on paper??

  15. The bathtub pic!! aw!!!!!! So cute. When I had cats (4 of them Plato, Kato, Nefertiti and Socrates) I had one that really had the curiosity thing down pat! Plato was a sleek, siamese mix ... imagine a Siamese but all black. He would get into the strangest places. Lucky for him he was also the most agile cat I ever saw and was able to get out of where he'd go. Though .... there was that one time he ended up on the neighbours roof...... firetruck was called. UGH!

  16. Lexy is the more curious of us, always having to inspect new things when they come in the house. Sometimes I surprise Mommy and check things out. You girls are so cute.

  17. Oh my mouses that picture with you in the recliner is a good one. Rushy used to "disappear" in the livin' room, sometimes. Peep #1 discovered he had made a way through the dust cloth thingy and was hangin' out INSIDE the big chair. Rushton has now outgrown crawlin' underneath that chair and up inside it, and when I say "outgrown," I mean that literally. He no longer fits. MOUSES!

  18. My Tibet is so much like Truffle! I can NOT keep her out of our fridge! Cats are amazing and while I do absolutely adore my pups, I think I was a cat in a previous life lol. I am always curious and there is never enough discovery and exploration! Such a fun post and I love learning more about Truffle and Brulee's personalities!

  19. I am laughing here so much because now I know where curiosity killed the cat comes from, they really keep you on your toes all the time LOL. Thanks for my morning laugh

  20. What adorable little adventurers! I recently had to get a child lock for my fridge because my dogs learned how to open it on their own. My younger dog figured it out, then my older dog took advantage and stole a bunch of food haha. My younger boy is only 2 and I have to say going from one to two dogs was for sure double the trouble.

  21. Mr. N thinks every open door is an invitation and he wants to go into all of the stores that have their doors open. Including the pot shop!

  22. Oh my goodness, how cute! That picture of Brulee on her tippy toes peering into the tub just about burst my heart in two! So precious! Our cat used to get into EVERYTHING... haha. We moved into a new house one time and couldn't find her.... she was just hanging out on top of the refrigerator LOL

  23. I've never had a kitten, but your two sure were curious! My dog Nelly loves to sit on top of boxes. One of her favorite places as a puppy was to sleep on top of a case of water bottles. It was weird. She still likes to do it, but we just accept that is her spot.

  24. Kitten photos of Truffle and Brulee ---- SQUUEEEEE CUTE! You two surely are curious! We've got some curious kitties here too. Caster loves the fridge (because of the food), and Sampson used to love getting inside our old couch. Like your girls, he figured out how to get up inside of it by going underneath it, clawing a hole in the liner across the bottom, and getting in. Scared me to death before I figured it out because I couldn't find him ANYWHERE!

  26. Such smile bringing pictures! I was curious where I was going to see Truffle next! And Brulee in the bathtub! Such cuteness! You've definitely brought me a little happiness! Thank you for sharing!

  27. Oh these bring back good memories. I remember in Dusty's early kitten stage she was fearless. Climbing and getting herself into all kinds of mess...literally. It's in part why I named her Dusty. (She almost got caught behind a dryer surrounded by lint!) Brulee and Truffle were clearly fearless divas too!

  28. Curiosity is both a prerequisite and result of happiness. And the more they explore, the more they learn, the more confident and therefore happy they become. Plus it's great mental stimulation.
