Friday at the Movies - Water Fountain

We're combining a lot of things with today's post:  a movie, flashback with Baby Truffle, and a special memory of Angel Sweet Praline.  We're continuing our focus on National Pet Hydration Month, which is sponsored by PetSafe.  Did you know that your pet needs one ounce of water per pound of body weight each day? Or that many pets instinctively prefer to drink moving water?  The flashback today is centered around the Drinkwell® Platinum Fountain, which is the first fountain we ever owned.

Now for a little flashback fun...

Way back in March 2009, Mom Paula purchased a Drinkwell Platinum Fountain for Angel Sweet Praline.  Praline was already 13 years old and the vet was recommending the need for more water in her diet.  Praline always drank from a regular bowl, but Mom Paula had read a lot about the positive aspects of running water for cats, so she bought a fountain.  Many of you will remember that Sweet Praline was known as the Diva of the Cat Blogosphere because of her little tortie catitude.

Mom Paula was so proud that she had been able to purchase a fountain for Sweet Praline with her tax refund, but try as she could, Sweet Praline wouldn't touch it.  She would just stand there staring at it and then go drink water out of her Gamecock water bowl.  The battle between Mom Paula and Sweet Praline went on for about two weeks.  Sweet Praline was having a lot of medical issues at this time, so Mom Paula had a little "raffle" and was able to raise enough funds to pay the vet bills and some other kitty was able to enjoy the fountain.  You can read about Sweet Praline and the fountain here.

Baby Truffle and the water fountain

When Truffle came to live with Mom Paula in September 2011, another Drinkwell Platinum fountain was purchased.  Truffle was already drinking from a fountain when she was a kitten and lived with Mom Terri.  Mom Paula considered getting the exact same fountain, but still liked the reviews of the Platinum fountain, so that's what she bought.  Mom Paula was sitting in the living room and kept hearing odd sounds of the water in the fountain, like it was stopping mid-stream.  She walked into the kitchen and caught Truffle with the fountain.  She quickly grabbed the video camera and shot footage of Truffle.  It's a little long and you'll hear the TV in the background because of the quick need to capture this video.  Once Truffle learned to drink from the "flow" it's the only way she'll drink the water.  We really liked this fountain because there is a large enough "bowl" for Brulee to drink.  The only problem with it is that it's plastic and Truffle started getting some feline acne so we had to stop using it. We still have it and it works great!   We really wish Drinkwell would make this same design in ceramic or stainless steel.

We're still drinking from water fountains and are very excited to try out a new fountain we received this weekend.  Stay tuned for our reaction and a give-away of a wonderful fountain from PetSafe.

  1. TBT gave up on our water fountain a few years ago. Iza wanted to catch the bubbles, so she started knocking it over with her broad shoulders and TBT got tired of mopping the floor.

  2. OMC, that video is so funny! I'm glad Truffle finally figured it out. When I came here, there was already a fountain, and I started using it right away.

  8. Oh yeah, our Mom bought us a Drinkwell Pagoda awhile back. It was a big deal for her too, getting something that cost that much. And like dear Praline, we stared at it, but never, ever used it.

  9. Yes, we refused the drinking fountain, something that shocked the woman as she had had fountains around in her home and the cats always used them. Well you know the moral: if you want it for us, we will refuse...

  10. I am going to have to try a fountain with Cinco and Manna. They are good about drinking water from their water bowls, but I think they would really enjoy the fresh, flowing water from a fountain. It looks like the two of you really love your fountains! I will be watching for that giveaway. :)

  11. That is a very cute video of Truffle. Me and Eric won a teardrop fountain in a giveaway by Angus Mhor. (I wonder what happened to him) Mum had to turn it off at night because Eric scraped all the water out of it all over the kitchen floor. She was afraid the motor would burn out if he got all the water out.

  15. Aww, Angel Praline! Most of us love our ceramic fountain but a couple of us prefer to sit with sad faces by the kitchen faucet in hopes someone will trickle the water there instead.
